Wednesday September 25, 2019

Through four states he walked. Through foot and ankle pain he walked. Through encounters with police and dogs he walked. Through inclement weather he walked. And he walked for us. He walked so that all of our votes can be equal, so that our representation can’t be bought out from under the American people. He walked because he believed the time for talk is over. Because the issues we are facing are too important to ignore any longer.

He walked for those of us who can’t, for those of us who feel disenfranchised, for those of us who feel like we don’t matter in this political system—and whose voices never seem to be heard. He walked over 700 miles, over 1.5 million steps, because it’s what you do when you’re fighting for something you believe in. When something is wrong with our country, it is our responsibility to fix it.  This is our country; for the people, by the people. We are the one’s we’ve been waiting for. Thank you Renaldo, for leading the way.

When we set out from Atlanta, we demanded that all presidential candidates pledge to secure our elections, protect our right to vote, and end political corruption.

Since the start of Democracy 911, the anti-corruption movement has made some tangible steps forward:

  • Senator Mitch McConnell reversed his position on election security, joining Republicans and Democrats in both houses of Congress and we secured more than $250 million in election security funding.
  • Michael Bennet responded to our pledge request with a public statement of support for our walk and our demands.
  • Pete Buttigieg, Beto O’Rourke and Tulsi Gabbard all recommitted to pushing sweeping pro-democracy measures in their first 100 days in office.
  • Elizabeth Warren delivered a seminal anti-corruption address to a crowd of thousands in NYC just last week pledging to make democracy issue #1.

We still have a far way to go, but we are making strides in the right direction! Hopefully Renaldo’s story will inspire others to go out and join the fight. He has already gained so much support from all across the country from people who want to see our broken system fixed! Check out some of the sit-in solidarity selfies on the left!

Tuesday September 24, 2019

This morning The Hill.TV aired Renaldo’s interview in which he talks about his historic walk and the problems facing our political system. From voter purges to gerrymandering, there is a lot to work on and moments like these are steps in the right direction.

Check out the full video here!

Renaldo also stopped by WUSA’s Morning Show “Great Day Washington”  for another opportunity to further spread his message and the incredible walk for our rights. In a last-ditch effort to save our democracy, Renaldo embarked on a 700-mile journey to answer our nation’s 911 call. His journey concluded in Washington D.C. last Saturday at the U.S. Capitol, where he started a peaceful sit-in urging all presidential candidates to pledge to fix the system, and the U.S. Senate to pass the For the People Act.

See Renaldo’s full interview with “Great Day Washington” here!

Today is also National Voter Registration day! One of the best ways to become involved with your democracy, and to support Renaldo’s fight, is to register to vote.

All the news outlets are buzzing with this weekend’s anti-corruption sit-in spearheaded by Renaldo and inspired by his walk to stand up for democracy!

Yahoo Finance published an article detailing presidential candidate Ben Gleib getting arrested at the sit-in on the steps.

Renaldo has been released and is safe and unharmed, thanks in part to the professionalism and care of the Washington D.C. police department. We know you are just doing your job, and as citizens, we are just doing ours.

A volunteer took a picture of the “Ouch Pouch” carried by Capitol Police, and it was too good not too share.

“We are here to dial 911 on American democracy. We are here to dial 911 on the political corruption in DC,” Renaldo said from the steps. “We see that it is political corruption that, every single time, stops our elected officials from actually moving on the policy that the majority of the people actually support. We are here to say no more.”

Renaldo’s walk was only the first step in the larger fight against corruption. 700 miles is a historic feat, but we together have so much further to go. Stay tuned and see where this journey takes us next!

Sunday September 22, 2019

What a historic weekend! On Friday Renaldo was invited to give a speech to the masses striking for climate change reform.

Listen to the live stream of his speech here!

On Saturday Renaldo completed his unfathomable 700 mile walk for democracy on the steps of the capitol building. With supporters standing strong beside him, and a marching band to provide inspiration on the last stretch, Renaldo demanded representation from our politicians and for them to fix our broken, rigged system.

A very special thank you to the Duke Ellington School for the Arts Marching Band who joined Renaldo for his final mile and provided a surge of energy and inspiration for the last few steps of this journey.

Subsequently Renaldo and 8 of his supporters were arrested for civil disobedience, specifically “Crowding, Obstruction, or Incommoding (D.C. Code § 22-1307).”

But their message was heard loud and clear. Every vote should count equally, and every single step of Renaldo’s legendary journey shows us that there are still people in this world who are willing to stand up—not only for themselves, but for the betterment of all of us.

Thank you Renaldo, for putting actions to words, for putting one foot in front of the other and showing us all what it means to be an American.

Nine people, including Renaldo, are arrested on the steps of the Capitol.

A crowd of over 50 people protest with Renaldo at the Capitol steps, risking arrest to join him in demanding an end to political corruption.

Renaldo arrives at the Capitol to sit on the steps as an act of protest. These are his demands: 1) protect voter rights 2) make elections secure and competitive and 3) end political corruption.

Around the country, supporters of Renaldo’s efforts show their appreciation by sitting with him in spirit.

Renaldo and a group of supporters walk the final mile to demand action to unrig our political system.

After walking more than 700 miles, across four states, through pouring rain and fierce Southern summer heat, Renaldo and a group of supports (and a marching band!) will walk the final mile to the United States Capitol steps.

RENALDO HAS ARRIVED IN D.C.!

Renaldo’s commitment to this movement is almost unfathomable. He’s woken up every single day for the last 2 months and walked over a million steps through four states, talking with Americans about our country’s corruption crisis.

Through pouring rain and Southern summer heat, he’s walked. Through ankle pain, blisters, and sore legs, he’s persevered.

And he’s doing it for all of us, for every American who believes our government should work for all of us, not just a handful of lobbyists and special interests. He’s doing it because we face an extraordinary challenge, and it calls for extraordinary action.

Let’s give this brave anti-corruption fighter the support he deserves. Send Renaldo a message to show him that Americans everywhere are with him, and he’ll read your words from the steps of the Capitol.

Friday September 13, 2019

Renaldo’s journey has been filled with memorable moments, but his family surprising him by popping up unannounced on the trail was a definitive personal highlight. It’s important to remember that we are fighting corruption for all Americans, and just as important to remember that your loved ones are part of the whole you are fighting for. Thank you Pearson family, for inspiring the man inspiring us!

Renaldo met with RepresentUs Roanoke leaders in Richmond yesterday as they petitioned and stood up against corruption within their state. #Democracy911

Thursday September 12, 2019

Renaldo took a brief break to speak with reporter Steve Nash about why he’s walking and the importance of standing up against corruption in our political system.

Renaldo has been walking along backroads for so long, it’s hard to decipher which direction to go when traveling down busy city streets. Whichever road leads to D.C. and democracy!

Wednesday September 11, 2019

On this infamous day, we hope this work brings light to a dark time. We stand with you, united as one country, and hope that this work continues to bring Americans closer together and inspire hope.

Thursday September 5, 2019

Renaldo begins walking at the crack of dawn to get ahead of the hurricane weather coming up the coast. It’s a good thing Renaldo is marrying a meteorologist—he feels prepared for the weather and is sending his love and support to all those affected along the path of the storm.

Wednesday September 4, 2019

Today’s journey brings Renaldo to the Virginia state border. At 2:44pm—after nearly 1 MILLION steps, over 500 miles, 5 weeks, and 3 states later—Renaldo crosses over into Virginia….his last state before DC!

A sweet volunteer drives by, offering water or Gatorade. After a few minutes of chatting she leaves—only to return with the best cookies in town from a local bakery.

Tuesday September 3, 2019

Good morning from the field! Renaldo shares his view of the road to all of us following along at home.

It’s a beautiful sunny day—no sign of Hurricane Dorian’s rain (yet). Renaldo also shares his view of Kerr Lake in Henderson, North Carolina as he walks.

Monday September 2, 2019

It’s Labor Day, but Renaldo is still “working.” Working to end political corruption before it ends us. The demands are simple – the journey is not.

Sunday September 1, 2019

It’s a Sunday—on Labor Day weekend, no less—but there are no days off. Renaldo is on the move.

Renaldo also attends service and a luncheon at United House of Prayer for All Greensboro with Councilwoman Sharon Hightower, District 1 representative on the Greensboro City Council in North Carolina at . It’s the weekend, but what is that when you’re fighting for the heart and soul of the Republic? Renaldo’s still on the road. Another 15.9 miles today brings him from Mebane, NC to Rougemont, NC. He’s meeting new friends all along the way!

Friday August 30, 2019

This morning, Renaldo hosts a press conference at the International Civil Rights Center & Museum.

Special speakers include Greensboro City Councilwoman Sharon Hightower, A&T State University SGA President Allison Gilmore, Rev. Nelson Johnson of the Beloved Community Center, and Reverend Bradley Hunt of the North Carolina NAACP.

Renaldo also got to sign the guest book, speak with local residents and students, and share his message of fighting corruption with all who attended.

The Museum honors the nonviolent protests of the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins that served as a catalyst in the civil rights movement—hallowed ground for a nonviolent protest movement like #Democracy911.

According to the museum’s website: “The February One Monument on the campus of North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C., stands a memorial to the courage, sacrifice and commitment four N.C. A&T freshmen (Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, Ezell Blair, Jr. and David Richmond) demonstrated on February 1, 1960.

On that cold, first day of February, these young men sat down at the “whites only” lunch counter and ignited America’s sit-in movement.”

Thursday August 29, 2019

Last night, Renaldo entered Greensboro, North Carolina well after the sun had set.

But this morning he had a great surprise—while passing through Greensboro, he was invited to speak to Professor Smith’s popular Introduction to Political Science course at North Carolina A&T University—the country’s largest HBCU college enrollment.

Students were so inspired by Renaldo’s efforts, a few even decided to walk with him after class!

Renaldo got a big hug from the professor, lots of love and encouragement, and then he was back on the road again—filled with even more fuel to keep going. Future generations depend on our fight against corruption.

At noon, Renaldo and team stopped at a community meeting at the Beloved Community Centre in Greensboro, where Renaldo was able to speak to organizers, leaders and community members about the work we’re doing and why it matters so much.

Among this group were folks from the Poor Peoples Campaign, Farm Workers Movement, and Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman – President of the NC NAACP.

Wednesday August 28, 2019

Everywhere he goes, Renaldo talks with everyone he meets along the way.

Tuesday August 27, 2019

Making his way from Lexington, NC to High Point, NC, Renaldo ran into two women, Emily Walker and Joyce Bullard.

Emily & Joyce were volunteering with the local Rich Fork Baptist Church food pantry! They offered him laughter, well wishes, and thoughtful prayers.

But shortly after departing from his two new “guardian angels” – it begins to rain. But a little rain won’t stop Renaldo!

Renaldo is interviewed on the road by Jamila Bey of 89.3FM, Washington D.C.’s Pacifica radio station.

Wednesday, August 21, 2019

It’s overcast and hot. Really hot. So hot that Renaldo’s phone shuts off as he tries to livestream from the road.

But fear not! Renaldo is in great spirits, waving to every car he passes—and is getting great responses from people he encounters on the road.

He says that “over the past two weeks, a lot of people make U-turns to offer rides! When I tell them that I’m doing a long-distance walk to D.C. to end political corruption before it kills all of us, they usually get it and respond with a ‘God bless you!’ or ‘Right on!'”

Tuesday, August 20, 2019

As Renaldo crossed into Charlotte, NC it rained for the first time since the walk started. But a little rain won’t stop us!

Today, Renaldo is interviewed on the side of the road by Spectrum News Charlotte, North Carolina’s only statewide news station covering Charlotte, the Triad, the Triangle-Sandhills, and the Coast.

Check out the latest piece from Sara Swann via the Fulcrum highlighting Renaldo’s “long-distance walk” from ATL to D.C. to fight for reform.
