Bloomington, MNDefeat RCV Repeal

Campaign Status: Active

The Policy

Defeat RCV repeal

Background

Bloomington is one of five Minnesota cities to use ranked-choice voting for mayoral and city council elections, and it has been used successfully for the past two elections. But opponents of the reform are trying to change that, and have put a repeal question on the ballot this November. They say RCV is “confusing” and “an election security issue”, but a 2021 exit poll of Bloomington voters by FairVote Minnesota found that 77% of voters found RCV to be simple to use, and 61% like and want to keep using it. Unfortunately, this is part of a broader anti-RCV campaign happening in the state: last year, there was a similar repeal effort in Minnetonka which was rejected by voters by even wider margins than it was passed. We’re confident we’ll see similar outcomes in Bloomington this year and are working with in-state partners to make it happen.
