MaineNational Popular Vote Interstate Compact
Campaign Status: Victory!
Outcome
On April 15, 2024, Maine became the latest state to adopt the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact as LD 1578 officially became law in the state of Maine.
The Policy
National Popular Vote (NPV) Interstate Compact guarantees the presidency to the winner who secures the most votes. It’s nonpartisan and works within the electoral college, and will go into effect when states representing 270 electoral college votes sign on to the agreement. After Maine became the latest to join, the bill has been enacted into law in 17 states and Washington D.C. possessing 209 electoral votes. Only 61 more electoral votes to go!
Background
The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact guarantees the presidency to the candidate who wins the popular vote in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. With the National Popular Vote:
- Every vote in every state in every presidential election will be equal. No battleground states, no spectator states.
- The candidate with the most votes across all 50 states and DC will win. No 2nd place winners.
- Candidates will be motivated to seek voter support in all 50 states and DC.
- Voter participation will increase because voters will know their vote matters.
65% of Americans support a National Popular Vote for President, according to a Pew Research Center Poll released in September 2023.
