MissouriDefeat RCV Ban

Campaign Status: Loss

Outcome

Voters in MO approved Amendment 7 (68.5% in favor / 31.5% against)

The Policy

Amendment 7, a ban on Ranked Choice Voting

Bad for voters: Ranked Choice Voting has been shown to help fix political gridlock, ensure elected representatives earn the support of a majority of voters in their districts, and turn campaigns into more positive affairs in many cities and states across the country, but despite the success of this reform, politicians in Missouri are attempting to ban it.

Background

In the 2024 legislative session, Missouri lawmakers referred a question to the ballot that would ban the use of ranked choice voting. It was important to note that Ranked Choice Voting is not currently used in Missouri; this was part of a broader legislative strategy by politicians who feel threatened by a reform that makes elections more competitive.
