ArizonaDefeat Attack on Judicial Accountability

Campaign Status: Victory!

Outcome

Voters in Arizona rejected Proposition 137 (77.67% against, 22.33% in favor).

The Policy

Proposition 137 would eliminate judicial retention elections, both now and in the future

Bad for voters: This proposition would have taken power away from voters, affecting their ability to vote on the retention of judges, including those involved in significant rulings such as the state’s historical abortion ban.

Background

You can tell a movement is on the rise when those in power do everything they can to stop it. Following a groundswell of momentum for reform in the Grand Canyon State, lawmakers have passed legislation designed to stop that momentum in its tracks, including Proposition 137.
