Through four states he walked. Through foot and ankle pain he walked. Through encounters with police and dogs he walked. Through inclement weather he walked. And he walked for us. He walked so that all of our votes can be equal, so that our representation can’t be bought out from under the American people. He walked because he believed the time for talk is over. Because the issues we are facing are too important to ignore any longer.
He walked for those of us who can’t, for those of us who feel disenfranchised, for those of us who feel like we don’t matter in this political system—and whose voices never seem to be heard. He walked over 700 miles, over 1.5 million steps, because it’s what you do when you’re fighting for something you believe in. When something is wrong with our country, it is our responsibility to fix it. This is our country; for the people, by the people. We are the one’s we’ve been waiting for. Thank you Renaldo, for leading the way.

When we set out from Atlanta, we demanded that all presidential candidates pledge to secure our elections, protect our right to vote, and end political corruption.
Since the start of Democracy 911, the anti-corruption movement has made some tangible steps forward:
- Senator Mitch McConnell reversed his position on election security, joining Republicans and Democrats in both houses of Congress and we secured more than $250 million in election security funding.
- Michael Bennet responded to our pledge request with a public statement of support for our walk and our demands.
- Pete Buttigieg, Beto O’Rourke and Tulsi Gabbard all recommitted to pushing sweeping pro-democracy measures in their first 100 days in office.
- Elizabeth Warren delivered a seminal anti-corruption address to a crowd of thousands in NYC just last week pledging to make democracy issue #1.
We still have a far way to go, but we are making strides in the right direction! Hopefully Renaldo’s story will inspire others to go out and join the fight. He has already gained so much support from all across the country from people who want to see our broken system fixed! Check out some of the sit-in solidarity selfies on the left!

This morning The Hill.TV aired Renaldo’s interview in which he talks about his historic walk and the problems facing our political system. From voter purges to gerrymandering, there is a lot to work on and moments like these are steps in the right direction.
Renaldo also stopped by WUSA’s Morning Show “Great Day Washington” for another opportunity to further spread his message and the incredible walk for our rights. In a last-ditch effort to save our democracy, Renaldo embarked on a 700-mile journey to answer our nation’s 911 call. His journey concluded in Washington D.C. last Saturday at the U.S. Capitol, where he started a peaceful sit-in urging all presidential candidates to pledge to fix the system, and the U.S. Senate to pass the For the People Act.
See Renaldo’s full interview with “Great Day Washington” here!
Today is also National Voter Registration day! One of the best ways to become involved with your democracy, and to support Renaldo’s fight, is to register to vote.

Renaldo has been released and is safe and unharmed, thanks in part to the professionalism and care of the Washington D.C. police department. We know you are just doing your job, and as citizens, we are just doing ours.
A volunteer took a picture of the “Ouch Pouch” carried by Capitol Police, and it was too good not too share.
“We are here to dial 911 on American democracy. We are here to dial 911 on the political corruption in DC,” Renaldo said from the steps. “We see that it is political corruption that, every single time, stops our elected officials from actually moving on the policy that the majority of the people actually support. We are here to say no more.”
Renaldo’s walk was only the first step in the larger fight against corruption. 700 miles is a historic feat, but we together have so much further to go. Stay tuned and see where this journey takes us next!
🙏🏽 Just trying to end political corruption before it ends us. Onward! For the people! ✊🏾 https://t.co/U37AkHxS3h

What a historic weekend! On Friday Renaldo was invited to give a speech to the masses striking for climate change reform.
On Saturday Renaldo completed his unfathomable 700 mile walk for democracy on the steps of the capitol building. With supporters standing strong beside him, and a marching band to provide inspiration on the last stretch, Renaldo demanded representation from our politicians and for them to fix our broken, rigged system.
A very special thank you to the Duke Ellington School for the Arts Marching Band who joined Renaldo for his final mile and provided a surge of energy and inspiration for the last few steps of this journey.

Subsequently Renaldo and 8 of his supporters were arrested for civil disobedience, specifically “Crowding, Obstruction, or Incommoding (D.C. Code § 22-1307).”
But their message was heard loud and clear. Every vote should count equally, and every single step of Renaldo’s legendary journey shows us that there are still people in this world who are willing to stand up—not only for themselves, but for the betterment of all of us.
Thank you Renaldo, for putting actions to words, for putting one foot in front of the other and showing us all what it means to be an American.

Renaldo’s commitment to this movement is almost unfathomable. He’s woken up every single day for the last 2 months and walked over a million steps through four states, talking with Americans about our country’s corruption crisis.
Through pouring rain and Southern summer heat, he’s walked. Through ankle pain, blisters, and sore legs, he’s persevered.
And he’s doing it for all of us, for every American who believes our government should work for all of us, not just a handful of lobbyists and special interests. He’s doing it because we face an extraordinary challenge, and it calls for extraordinary action.
Let’s give this brave anti-corruption fighter the support he deserves. Send Renaldo a message to show him that Americans everywhere are with him, and he’ll read your words from the steps of the Capitol.

Renaldo also got to sign the guest book, speak with local residents and students, and share his message of fighting corruption with all who attended.
The Museum honors the nonviolent protests of the 1960 Greensboro sit-ins that served as a catalyst in the civil rights movement—hallowed ground for a nonviolent protest movement like #Democracy911.
According to the museum’s website: “The February One Monument on the campus of North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C., stands a memorial to the courage, sacrifice and commitment four N.C. A&T freshmen (Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, Ezell Blair, Jr. and David Richmond) demonstrated on February 1, 1960.
On that cold, first day of February, these young men sat down at the “whites only” lunch counter and ignited America’s sit-in movement.”

At noon, Renaldo and team stopped at a community meeting at the Beloved Community Centre in Greensboro, where Renaldo was able to speak to organizers, leaders and community members about the work we’re doing and why it matters so much.
Among this group were folks from the Poor Peoples Campaign, Farm Workers Movement, and Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman – President of the NC NAACP.
@RenaldoPearson is the truth! #Democracy911 We’re definitely in a state of emergency! Get in tune with this messed up country we call America!

Good morning from beautiful High Point University in North Carolina! It’s the first campus Renaldo has walked through on his journey. So far, he’s gone over 350 miles (and over half a million steps) from Atlanta to High Point, NC.
He’s headed to Greensboro today from High Point, NC – arriving by evening.

First thing in the morning, Renaldo learns that he’s on the front page the local paper! He’s stopped by an officer named Valerie, and Betty, a local bus driver, who are so excited to tell him he’s made the front page of the High Point Enterprise.
Valerie even asked to get his autograph on a copy—true celeb status!
So my new friends Officer Valerie and Bus Driver Betty stopped me (and caused a traffic jam) on my way through @HighPointU to let me know that I made the front page! 🤗 #DayMade #Democracy911 pic.twitter.com/EAVAwqCUUt

Everywhere he goes, Renaldo talks with everyone he meets along the way.
This is what this walk is all about: starting conversations street by street that connect the dots to the corruption that’s killing or threatening to kill us all. #Democracy911 pic.twitter.com/IrXgMtePuB

Making his way from Lexington, NC to High Point, NC, Renaldo ran into two women, Emily Walker and Joyce Bullard.
Emily & Joyce were volunteering with the local Rich Fork Baptist Church food pantry! They offered him laughter, well wishes, and thoughtful prayers.
But shortly after departing from his two new “guardian angels” – it begins to rain. But a little rain won’t stop Renaldo!
Every now and then, there’s rain…but “rain don’t stop #DaHouse” ✊🏾 (@Morehouse reference) #Democracy911 pic.twitter.com/hqL9P476QR

Renaldo continues his journey through North Carolina, showing off some of the scenery (and animal friends) along the way. Arriving in China Grove, NC marks 300 miles along the walk—halfway to D.C.!
Renaldo’s kind host, Aunt Kimberly Brown, shared a sweet video of her young daughter comparing Renaldo to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
😂 So my Charlotte host, Aunt Kimberly Brown, is simply the best! But this video she did with her daughter, Harlem, about what I’m doing has given me SO much LIFE! #WhatItsAllAbout

The latest piece from Independent Voter Network (IVN) mentions the Democracy911 walk as one of the “6 big fights against voter suppression that neither party wants you to know about.“

It’s overcast and hot. Really hot. So hot that Renaldo’s phone shuts off as he tries to livestream from the road.
But fear not! Renaldo is in great spirits, waving to every car he passes—and is getting great responses from people he encounters on the road.
He says that “over the past two weeks, a lot of people make U-turns to offer rides! When I tell them that I’m doing a long-distance walk to D.C. to end political corruption before it kills all of us, they usually get it and respond with a ‘God bless you!’ or ‘Right on!'”
In case you’re wondering what my 9-5 looks like over the next 5 weeks…
This is over 500,000 steps and 250 miles in, and I won’t stop until all the presidential candidates pledge to #UnrigTheSystem, or the U.S. Senate passes a bi-partisan alternative to H.R.1… pic.twitter.com/w1KxPV5C1I

Today, Renaldo is interviewed on the side of the road by Spectrum News Charlotte, North Carolina’s only statewide news station covering Charlotte, the Triad, the Triangle-Sandhills, and the Coast.
Check out the latest piece from Sara Swann via the Fulcrum highlighting Renaldo’s “long-distance walk” from ATL to D.C. to fight for reform.

As he climbs into bed at the end of a long day, he sees himself on local TV—and almost fell out of the bed he was so surprised!
Craziest thing happened last night: got in bed, decided to turn on the TV, and not even 1 minute later, this is on (didn’t change the channel or anything — almost fell out of the bed, lol) @SpecNewsCLT…#Democracy911 pic.twitter.com/JaTzxsO63r
