Minnesota: Democracy for the People Act

Campaign Status: Victory!

Outcome

On May 5, 2023, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed the Democracy for the People Act into law. It is the biggest piece of pro-democracy legislation in Minnesota in almost 50 years.

The Policy

The Democracy for the People Act (Bill HF3 / SF3) is a revolutionary package of pro-voter reforms that

  1. Expands voting access with automatic voter registration, pre-registration of 16 and 17-year-olds, increased language accessibility for election materials, and by restoring voting rights to formerly incarcerated individuals on probation or parole
  2. Fights money in politics by closing dark money loopholes, prohibiting foreign-influenced corporations from spending in elections, and creating a democracy dollars voucher program for public campaign financing
  3. Supports free and fair elections by protecting the safety of voters and election officials from intimidation or harassment at the polls, streamlining voter participation with online voter registration, and using more federally appropriated funds for state and local election security and infrastructure

Background

Minnesota is no exception to the troubling trends we’ve seen across the nation; lawmakers are carrying out the will of moneyed special interests, not the people they serve. Reversing this trend requires structural change to create a government that actually does work for the people.

We Choose Us is a coalition of grassroots organizations, unions, and advocacy groups fighting for a better and more representative, multiracial democracy. To accomplish this, they’re introducing a bold package of reforms that shore up our democratic institutions and invite more people to participate in holistic civic engagement.
