ArizonaDefeat Anti-Reform Initiative

Campaign Status: Victory!

Outcome

Voters in Arizona rejected Proposition 133 (57.7% against, 42.3% in favor).

The Policy

Proposition 133 would have locked in the existing primary system and made reforming the state’s primary system more difficult.

Bad for voters: Independent voters are the largest group of voters in the state of Arizona. Locking in the state’s existing primary system and preventing its reform would continue to deny these voters a voice in their representation.

Background

You can tell a movement is on the rise when those in power do everything they can to stop it. Following a groundswell of momentum for reform in the Grand Canyon State, lawmakers have passed legislation designed to stop that momentum in its tracks, including Proposition 133.

Who’s Involved?

We endorsed a “No” on Proposition 133, and worked with democracy advocates in the state like Better Ballot AZ and Progress AZ to spread the word.
