ArizonaReject Attack on Direct Democracy

Campaign Status: Victory!

Outcome

Voters in Arizona rejected Proposition 134 (57.9% against, 42.1% in favor)

The Policy

Proposition 134 makes the citizen’s initiative process more difficult by requiring signature gatherers to go to each legislative district and get signatures from 5% of the voting population, on top of existing signature requirements.

Bad for voters: When politicians fail to act, the citizen’s ballot initiative allows citizens to make progress on the issues they care most about. It’s one of the purest forms of democracy we have, and by making it more difficult to collect signatures to get an issue on the ballot, politicians will take power away from the people.

Background

You can tell a movement is on the rise when those in power do everything they can to stop it. Following a groundswell of momentum for reform in the Grand Canyon State, lawmakers have passed legislation designed to stop that momentum in its tracks, including Proposition 134.

Who’s Involved?

We endorsed a “No” on Proposition 134, and worked with democracy advocates in the state like Better Ballot AZ and Progress AZ to spread the word.
