Maine: Expand Ranked Choice Voting

Campaign Status: Active

The Policy

Pass legislation in 2025 to expand the use of Ranked Choice Voting to state elections

Background

Maine has been a pioneer of Ranked Choice Voting, having become the first state to adopt the system statewide in 2016 and then having voters decide to preserve it in a 2018 vote.

However, due to a State Supreme Court decision limiting RCV to only federal and local campaigns, full implementation of Ranked Choice Voting has never been achieved as the voters had desired. There is an opportunity to achieve full implementation of RCV in the state in 2025.
