The Policy

Measure 127: Majority Winner Requirement

✅ Good for voters: Initiative 127 would have required the winner of the general election to obtain over 50% of the vote, replacing the current plurality-winner system which allows a candidate to be elected with less than a majority of voter support.

Background

Montana’s partisan primary system has contributed to increasing polarization in the state, as candidates have to appeal to the more extreme to win in low-turnout partisan primaries. Initiative 127 would have paired with Initiative 126 to give voters more choices and ensure the winning candidate is backed by the majority of voters.
