With America’s democratic experiment mired in division and dysfunction, the state of Alaska votes to revolutionize their election system.

The surprising results spark new alliances, a growing call for election reform, and fierce pushback from political parties.

Could changing how Americans vote also change politics for the better?

The Problem with our Election System

In 15 states, more than 15.7 million registered independent voters can’t vote in primary elections

And because most general elections in the U.S. are uncompetitive, getting locked out of the primary can mean getting excluded from the decisive election and having less of a say in who represents you.

In the 2024 primaries, 84% of the U.S. House has been elected by just 7% of Americans

Despite the fact that over 100 million Americans will likely vote in the 2024 general election1, a staggering number of U.S. Representatives will have already been effectively elected in low turnout primaries.

How We Fix It

A better system: Nonpartisan Primaries + Ranked Choice Voting

The simple tweak of allowing independent and unaffiliated voters to participate in the process and ensuring winning candidates receive a majority, gives greater choice and voice to voters, and produces better representation and political incentives. It’s worked in Alaska; it can work everywhere.

Politicians will only act if the American People demand it

Those in power who benefit from the status quo will do nothing to improve it. It’s up to We The People to demand change. Unite America and RepresentUs are building a nationwide movement to implement Nonpartisan Primaries and Ranked Choice Voting across the country.
